Bernardino Azzolino Della Ciaja

Nato a Siena nel 1671, compositore ed organista, appartiene a quella folta schiera di autori minori che hanno sempre affollato il panorama musicale di ogni secolo. Fu chierico dell'ordine dei Cavalieri di S. Stefano, sulle cui galee militò per molti anni, in vecchiaia vestì l'abito talare, ritirandosi a Pisa, presso la chiesa dell'ordine di appartenenza, dove morì nel 1755 ed è tuttora sepolto.

Compose Cantate da camera, Sonate per cembalo, Salmi concertati e altra musica sacra e per organo. Fece costruire nella chiesa dei Cavalieri un grandioso organo a quattro manuali e oltre cento registri.

Su indicazioni di una diretta discendente del compositore, il M° Fabrizio Fancello ha rinvenuto questo gloria nella Staatsbibliothek di Berlino. Il M° Fancello e il M° Faveto hanno successivamente provveduto alla revisione e alla trascrizione.

Il Coro Musica Nova ha eseguito l'opera nella stessa chiesa dei Cavalieri dove giace il compositore, nel corso di un concerto tenuto il 26 maggio 1995, in occasione delle manifestazioni per la Regata delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare.

Born in Siena in 1671, composer and organist, Della Ciaja belongs to the great array of minor authors that have always crowded the musical scene of every century. He was cleric of the order of the St. Stephen Knights, on whose galleys he was soldier for many years. When he grew old he wore the cassock, thus retiring himself by the Church of the belonging order, where he died in 1755 and still there buried.

He composed chamber cantatas, harpsichord sonatas, concerted psalms and other sacred music for organ. He led the construction of a grand organ having four keyboards. Following the indications of a direct descendant of the composer, M° Fabrizio Fancello has found out this Gloria in the Staatsbibliothek of Berlin. M° Fancello and M° Faveto have subsequently provided the revision and the transcription of the said piece.

The Coro Musica Nova has executed the work in the same Church of The Knight where the composer is buried, during a concert given in May, 26th , 1995, in the occasion of the events connected to the Regata delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare.
